Last week, I shared how I’ve been redefining success on my own terms. But intentional living isn’t just about looking forward. Sometimes, it’s about looking back.

October is Hindu Heritage Month, and while the world might see our traditions as colorful festivals and beautiful rituals… we know there’s more beneath the surface.

So this month, we’re going back to our roots – not to stay in the past, but to move forward with more clarity, balance, and agency. Because ancient wisdom is a guiding framework. And it’s been ours all along.

Growing up Hindu, I celebrated everything — garba nights, Diwali firecrackers, the works. But like many South Asian Millennials and Gen Z, tradition was something I inherited, not something I always understood.

It wasn’t until I started noticing my own disconnect – ignoring my body, my energy, my needs – that I realized something profound: Hinduism isn’t just a religion – it’s a way of living with awareness, meaning, and intention.

And one of the first doors that opened for me was Ayurveda.

Ayurveda isn’t just turmeric lattes and spa days. It’s ancient guidance for the moments when life feels imbalanced and we forget to care for ourselves. It teaches us how to live in harmony with who we are – mind, body, and spirit – so we can stop just surviving and start feeling rooted again.

Ayurveda for Beginners: Living With Awareness

Ayurveda was always quietly present in my life, through small, everyday habits like tongue scraping and haldi doodh (turmeric milk). I never questioned these ayurvedic practices; I just blindly believed they worked because “that’s what we do.”

My true appreciation for Ayurveda began when a friend, who had struggled with chronic painful digestive issues, with no helpful answers from gastroenterologists, finally turned to an Ayurvedic doctor. The advice the doctor gave was simple yet natural – cut out processed foods and focus on whole, nourishing meals. After implementing this change, within a month, his symptoms improved dramatically. 

That was the turning point for me. I realized Ayurveda isn’t about outdated or rigid rules. It’s practical wisdom. It’s tuning into what our body has been trying to tell us all along.

At it’s core, Ayurveda is living with awareness – paying attention to how we feel, what we consume (as I explore in my post on evolving South Asian food with intention), and how our choices shape our well-being. That awareness becomes the bridge to modern intentional living: not doing things because we were told to, but because they support our balance, our energy, and our health.

Ayurveda for beginners: If you’re curious where to start, begin small this week:
Swap one processed snack for fresh fruit, or drink lukewarm water in the morning instead of iced coffee. Then notice what shifts. These small intentional shifts build self-awareness, which is the foundation of living with intention.

Understanding Your Dosha for Personalized Wellness

Ayurveda teaches that each of us has a unique constitution — a dosha — shaping how we think, digest, rest, and respond to stress: Vata (air + space), Pitta (fire + water), and Kapha (water + earth).

Here’s a simple snapshot:

Vata-dominant: benefit from grounding routines, warm meals, and consistent sleep schedule

Pitta-dominant (like myself): thrive from cooling foods, meditation, and stress reducing habits

Kapha-dominant: feel best with movement, energizing routines, and stimulating environments

Understanding your dosha means observing long-term patterns in yourself, such as your mental and emotional tendencies, energy and digestion, and the stimuli that throw you off balance.

This isn’t about labeling yourself. It’s about understanding your natural tendencies so you can make choices that align with your body and mind, not force yourself into someone else’s mold.

7 Simple Ayurvedic Practices for Beginners to Create Daily Balance

For most of my life, I treated health like something to fix only when it broke. From topical retinoids for acne scars to prescriptions for everyday issues, I relied on prescriptions and quick solutions – waiting for someone else to tell me what my body needed.

But Ayurveda taught me something different:
Well-being isn’t reactive. It’s intentional.
It’s built through the tiny choices we make every single day.

Here are some simple ayurvedic practices that help me own my health, live in alignment, and create balance-

  • Applying aloe vera to face → hyrdates and soothes inflammation
    • Especially supportive for Pitta or Vata skin sensitivities
  • Applying weekly oil or henna → natural hair nourishment
    • Slows stress-related graying for Pitta, combats hair dryness for Vata
  • Drinking lukewarm water → supports digestion
    • Cooling for Pitta, grounding for Vata, energizing for Kapha
  • Performing Surya Namaskar (sun salutations) → mind-body alignment
    • Calms Pitta, energizes Vata, and balances Kapha sluggishness
  • Taking turmeric, ginger, and honey shots → immune support
    • Supports all doshas with inflammation and digestion
  • Slowing down before bed → improved sleep and lower stress
    • Helps Pitta switch off, steadies Vata, prevents Kapha sluggishness
  • Reducing alcohol intake → greater balance
    • Prevents Pitta overheating, supports energy for Kapha

You might already practice some of these, or you might have different approaches that work better for your unique constitution. Ayurveda connects these small choices into a bigger picture of balance.

Ayurveda for beginners: You don’t need to overhaul your life to start. Try one small shift:

  • Lukewarm water in the morning
  • One tech-free hour before bed
  • One meal that feels nourishing instead of convenient

What makes these more than just daily habits is the intentionality behind them. I now choose them consciously because they align with my value of prioritizing my health, not just because tradition told me so.

Beyond Ayurveda: How Hindu Values Guide Balance

Ayurveda was my doorway back into larger Hindu wisdom – a framework for living consciously.

  • Dharma → Living with purpose and integrity (my personal compass)
  • Ātman → Recognizing inner strength and resilience
  • Seva → Serving others as a path to joy

These aren’t abstract concepts — they are a lived framework for making choices with awareness and intention.

Hindu wisdom forms a modern blueprint for balance – one that Millennials and Gen Z can live by without losing who we are or where we come from.
