Living Your Dharma: Alignment Beyond the “Standard Script”
Ever catch yourself winning a game you never actually wanted to play?
Throughout my twenties, I was often pushed toward paths that looked good on paper – the master’s degrees, the lucrative career path, the steady boxes to tick on a set timeline. And while those paths weren’t inherently bad, I’ve come to realize they weren’t mine.
I remember hesitating before accepting each of my last three corporate jobs, feeling a quiet, persistent tug in my chest. At the time, I labeled it imposter syndrome, dismissing it as anxiety or self-doubt. But in hindsight, that tug was my inner self signaling that these weren’t my dharma – that I wasn’t truly living in alignment
I still accepted all three jobs because they looked good on paper. Because that’s what I was “supposed” to do.
And that’s the trap so many of us fall into. When society, parents, or internal comparisons push us into roles that don’t fit, we lose touch with who we really are. We end up living for the version of ourselves others want to see, not the version that feels alive inside.
For years, I thought success was checking every box. But even when everything looked perfect, something inside me always felt off.
Duty vs. Alignment: Dharma in Modern Life
In South Asian culture, we are often taught that doing the “right” thing means doing what is expected. Traditionally, dharma referred to fulfilling your duty to family or community without attachment to reward.
But here’s the thing: when duty becomes obligation that is disconnected from who we are, it stops serving anyone. Modern dharma isn’t about checking boxes; it’s about living in alignment.
For me, that means showing up authentically — not as a daughter trying to make everyone proud, but as a woman choosing integrity over approval. Instead of saying, “I need 100K a year for my family,” living your dharma sounds like: “I love writing, so I’ll create a way to make an impact through it.” Values come first; duty flows from alignment, not the other way around.
Sharing my stories here is my practice of modern dharma: I thrive, I learn, I align with purpose, and the positive ripple reaches others naturally. Fulfillment comes first, impact follows.
What Is Modern Dharma?
Dharma teaches that the “right” thing starts with what is true to you. It is not a title you attain, a destination you reach, or a script you follow.
It is the role you naturally take on regardless of the setting. Dharma is your most fundamental state of being — a set of tendencies that noone can take from you. Even when the world pulls you in different directions, your dharma never leaves.
- If you are a leader, you will lead, whether you climb the corporate ladder or remain at the start.
- If you are a healer, you will heal, whether as a doctor or a volunteer.
- If you are a teacher, you will teach, whether in a classroom or in a conversation.
Your “how” is not tied to external metrics or even specific strengths. It is tied to your values, your interests, and your calling. It is your eternal truth — the way you exist independent of any conditioning or noise.
The Bhagavad Gita puts it powerfully:
“It is better to live your own dharma imperfectly than to live someone else’s perfectly.” (3.35)
Intentional living is simply the process of designing a life around this truth, rather than what looks good on paper.
How to Start Living Your Dharma Today
Moving into alignment doesn’t demand a massive leap; it’s built through small, brave steps:
Listen inward: That tug in your chest is valuable information. Pay attention to the moments that make you feel drained versus the moments that make you feel alive.
Redefine success: Success ≠ society’s checklist. If your wins don’t feel like wins, it’s time to rewrite the definition. Living your dharma will always bring deeper, more-lasting satisfaction than validation from others.
Choose Momentum Over Perfection: Dharma is messy. Remember that it’s better to be an “imperfect” version of yourself than a “perfect” version of someone else.
Stay open: Your dharma evolves as you do. Who you were five years ago isn’t who you are now – and that’s not failure, it’s growth.

Dharma as My Compass: Alignment Every Day
For me, dharma isn’t just a concept – it’s my compass. It keeps me grounded when life gets noisy, reminding me to pause before each choice. There are days I still slip into old patterns —chasing approval or doubting my voice. But when you are committed to living your dharma, even your detours bring you back home.
The path unfolds as you walk it. And the most beautiful part is that when you’re living your dharma, the fulfillment comes from the day-to-day journey and growth, not an end-goal. It comes from the intention not the outcome. Internally not externally.
Here’s a simple exercise to start:
- Ask yourself – When do I feel most like myself?
- Write down your top 3 values you refuse to compromise on.
- Notice your patterns and choose one small intentional step today that reflects those values. It could be a decision, a conversation, or even a habit.
Small, consistent steps build clarity and alignment over time. Because when you’re living your dharma, your life doesn’t just look good – it feels good.
